Monsoon likely to be normal, farm prospects bright

"The recent rain spell has brightened the prospects for the Kharif sowing season though monsoon has been late. It was a matter of concern initially as it did not even catch up after the first week of July," IARI principal scientist N V K Chakravarty said.

NEW DELHI: Prospects of a bumper Kharif foodgrain production have brightened following heavy rains in the country this year, with farm scientists observing that the deficiency in rainfall due to delay in onset of South-West monsoon has been made good.

"The recent rain spell has brightened the prospects for the Kharif sowing season though monsoon has been late. It was a matter of concern initially as it did not even catch up after the first week of July," IARI principal scientist N V K Chakravarty said.

According to the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), during the season from June 1 to July 19 rainfall was excess in one, normal in 23 and deficient in 12 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions.

The all-India area weighted rainfall for that season was 14 per cent below normal.

The model predictions of the NCMRWF suggest that low pressure area is likely to form over north-west Bay of Bengal around July 28, which might intensify further and rainfall activities may enhance over Orissa, West Bengal and Jharkand.

Chakravarty said Haryana, Punjab and Delhi have received substantial rainfall, raising hopes of a bounty paddy and bajra production.

He said if the good trend continued during August and September as well, the wheat output would be very high due to formation of rich moisture and good water reservoir position.

Since wheat crop is mainly grown in well-irrigated areas (from September) the water table and other advantages of good monsoon will be helpful at the time of rabi sowing season beginning after two months, he said.
