342 Indians arrive from Lebanon

A total of 342 Indians, evacuated from Lebanon, arrived here on Friday night by a special Air-India flight from Larnaca, Cyprus.

CHENNAI: A total of 342 Indians, evacuated from the trouble-torn Lebanon, arrived here on Friday night by a special Air-India flight from Larnaca, Cyprus.
 
Majority of the passengers who arrived by the Boeing 747-400, were from Tamil Nadu. Ten of them were Keralites.
 
Union Minister of State for External Affairs Vyalar Ravi, who received the Indian nationals, told reporters that the process of evacuation of Indians from Lebanon would continue and whoever reported to the Indian emabassy at Beirut would be airlifted.
 
Tamil Nadu Ministers M R K Paneerselvam and Thangam Thennarasu were present at the airport.
 
The Tamil Nadu ministers said an immediate assistance of Rs 500 and food were being given to the passengers most of whom were employed in Lebanon.
 
While accommodation has been arranged for those who wanted to stay back here special buses would be available for those wanting to continue their journey to their home towns, they said.
 
The Indians who arrived here included three women.
 
Ravi said the other flight, arriving in Mumbai, would carry Indians hailing from Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab and Haryana.
 
Ravi said 119 of the over 475 passengers arriving in Mumbai were from Tamil Nadu and they would be flown here by a chartered Indian Airlines flight on Saturday morning.
 
Air-India had flown the two flights from Mumbai to Larnaca, Cyprus, where the stranded Indians had been ferried from Lebanon by Indian Navy yesterday as part of its rescue mission.
