Delhi University began its new academic year on Monday with scores of new students, stringent security measures in place and a strict ban on ragging.

Authorities, reaffirmed that all the necessary arrangements are in place to welcome newcomers. "We have made arrangements to make the newcomers feel comfortable. A majority of the colleges have already completed their orientation and induction classes to familiarise students with the college norms," said SK Vij, dean, students' welfare, of the university.

"We have taken the help of police and some of the colleges have installed surveillance cameras to keep a close eye on miscreants. Two control rooms — one each at south campus and north campus — have been set up to register complaints too," Vij said.

He added that mobile inspection squads have been formed to carry out surprise checks in hostels and university buses. This year, over a dozen colleges have deployed surveillance cameras, about which students had mixed feelings.
