CM convenes emergency meet of top officials

MUMBAI:  Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh convened an emergency meeting of top officials to discuss the situation in the wake of desecration of the bust of Meenatai, and violent protests by Shiv Sainiks across the state.

 

"The Chief Minister is currently in meeting with top state level officials who are briefing him on the situation in the state especially Mumbai," CM office sources said.

 

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy said any kind of violence will be dealt with firmly.

 

Speaking to newsmen, Roy said police units across the city have been kept on alert and any kind of violence would be dealt with firmly.

 

"We have posted bandobast, police vehicles are patrolling and fixed point units have been deployed," Roy further said.

 

Commenting on the violent reactions in rest of the state, Director General of Police, P S Pasricha said he has alerted all police units in the state and has talked to police commissioners and Inspector Generals (IGs) personally asking them to keep a strict vigil.

 

"There are two-three incidents of stone pelting at Nasik, one bus was burnt, otherwise things are under control," the DGP told PTI here on Sunday.

 

Sena protests 'natural reaction': BJP

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sought immediate arrest of those who had desecrated a statue of Meenatai, wife of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, in Mumbai and described the protests in parts of Maharasthra as a "natural reaction" to the act.

 

 "The Maharashtra government should act quickly and arrest those responsible for the desecration," BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said in New Delhi.

 

 Asked about his comments on the protests in parts of Maharashtra following the desecration of Meena Tai's statue, the BJP leader said it was a "natural reaction" to the act.
