28 dead in Maharashtra, 3 in Madhya Pradesh

Ten people lost their lives in Nagpur due to drowning and lightning. Five deaths have been reported from Jalgaon and another four deaths in Amravati.

NEW DELHI: At least 28 deaths were reported from Maharashtra during the past 36 hours as incessant rains accompanied by strong winds continued to batter Mumbai and its suburbs for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday.

Ten people lost their lives in Nagpur due to drowning and lightning. Five deaths have been reported from Jalgaon district and another four deaths in Amravati.

The State had announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased, State Chief Secretary DK Shankaran said. Shankaran said 223 people had been killed in rain-related incidents in various parts of the state since May 18.

Secretary, Relief and Rehabilitation, KS Vatsa said that Gagan Bavda and Radha Nagar areas of Kolhapur district received heavy rainfall, and added Panchaganga river is flowing above the danger mark.

In Madhya Pradesh, three people died as they were washed away by floodwaters in the state even as heavy rains disrupted normal life in Khargone and Badwani districts with passengers being stranded as road links the past eight hours due heavy rains and floods.

In the capital, a cloudy sky and South Easterly winds provided some relief from the sultry weather of the last few days.

Incessant rainfall in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh since the past three days has raised the level of Indravati river, which is flowing 2.5 metres above the danger mark. A flood-like situation has been created in about 250 villages near the river.

Heavy rains due to depression in the Bay of Bengal for the last three days caused floods in several places in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts of Andhra Pradesh.

In Karnataka, a flood warning was issued near the Kabini reservoir and authorities have asked people to move to safer places after incessant rains lashed the catchment areas in the Wayanad district of Kerala.
