If airport sources are to be believed, there would be no long check-in queues, harrowing delays in security checks and other inconveniences travellers experience at the domestic airport.

The second phase of upgradation and modernisation of Terminal 1-B is expected to be available for passenger usage by June-end. With the opening, the domestic airport will be able to handle twice as many passengers as it does now.

The spokesperson of MIAPL said the second part of the terminal 1-B would be open in a couple of weeks, but added that the date was not fixed yet.

The terminal was scheduled to be completed by April, but on Mumbai International Airport Private Limited’s (MIAPL) suggestion, the date was extended.

‘They suggested some improvements such as expansion of floor capacity, addition of food court and more seating,” said a source in Unity Infraprojects, the construction company that took up the modernisation and upgradation project.

Work has been going on at the terminal in two phases for a year now. The six-month-long phase-I, under which a section of the terminal was upgraded, was completed in June 2005. Now, under the second phase, the remaining part of the terminal is likely to be opened soon.

“Ninety per cent of the work has been completed. We expect the rest to be completed soon,” an airport official said.
