NEW DELHI: The Centre on Sunday gave a written assurance to the striking medical students that the number of seats for general category students will not be reduced and that it will take note of their demand for a committee to examine the quota proposal. In previous meetings with the students, the Centre had consistently refused to concede this demand.

But the striking medicos rejected the proposals and called for a bandh in the Capital on Wednesday, May 31.

"Our demand for an expert committee has not been met. The government has said it will examine the demand but when and how is not clear. There is no clear time frame given," Dr Neha Gandhi, a spokesperson of the agitating students, said.

Gandhi said the government's assurance on increasing the number of seats in educational institutes was "superficial" as it was claiming that the total number of seats all over the country will not be decreased and at the same time 27 per cent reservation would be implemented.

"It means seats will come down in some institutions, whereas it will remain the same in some others. This will cause difficulty for students," Gandhi said.

“The statement says the total number of seats for general category students will remain intact and that implementation of 27 per cent reservation for OBCs will be staggered,” said Safal Singh, a representative of the resident doctors’ association at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. “The statement also says that there will be no salary cuts for resident doctors, and letters of dismissal issued to them will not hold.”

The Centre also appointed M Veerappa Moily, former Karnataka chief minister and now chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission, as head of an overseer committee that will prepare the roadmap to address the issue of reservation in central institutes, Union Minister Oscar Fernandes told reporters this on Sunday after a 90-minute meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his official residence.

Doctors of the state-run Guru Teg Bahadur, Sucheta Kriplani, LNJP and MAMC hospitals decided to go on mass casual leave from Monday.
