MUMBAI: Fans of Aamir Khan have a lot to be happy about. The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) ministry on Saturday asked the Narendra Modi government to stop politicising the film Fanaa and requested the Gujarat government and the BJP party to not link the film to the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP).

"I strongly feel that nothing has been said contrary to the interests of the people of Gujarat by any actor of the film industry including Aamir Khan against SSP. I hope good sense will prevail," said Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi.

Dasmunshi added, "If these kind of instances are engineered, encouraged or supported by any political party or by any government, it will be contrary to our democracy." Dasmunshi said that a deliberate attempt is being made to use certain dialogues of the film to distort the comments made by Aamir Khan regarding rehabilitation. The I&B minister defended the role of an actor in supporting various social issues and questioning government policies.

"This is not the first time that any actor has used his public relations skills for a cause. Many actors in the past have shown guts to question the policies of Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Have people been asked to stop seeing their films," asked Dasmunshi.

Dasmunshi strongly stated that the censor board has all the rights to clear a film or ask for cuts and only on rare occasions did the I&B ministry interfere. Unless of course there are any attempts to denigrate the judiciary, the President of India or any attempt to undermine the parliament or the sitting chair of the parliament.

Anti-Aamir Khan stir spreads in Vadodara

VADODARA: The anti-Aamir Khan protests in Vadodara on Saturday spread to the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Taking exception to the film star's support to Medha Patkar-led Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), the students of the university's science faculty burnt posters of the actor's latest release Fanaa, the film which is banned in Gujarat by the BJP over Aamir's stand on the dam issue.

Meanwhile, local leaders of two main political parties, including city BJP president Sabdasaran Brahmabhatt and Congress Leader of Opposition Chirag Zaveri, welcomed the decision of the film exhibitors of Gujarat not to show Fanaa in the State.
