TARAPUR: Power-starved Maharashtra will get 850 MW electricity from nuclear power plants with the addition of two 540 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors from August at a competitive tariff rate of Rs 2.65, according to Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Anil Kakodkar.

Addressing the media after unit three of the Tarapur Atomic Power Plant (TAPP-3) of the Nuclear Power Corporation (NPCIL) became crtitcal on Sunday morning, Kakodkar said Maharashtra will receive the largest share -- 430 MW -- of electricity, about 38 per cent of 1080 from the two 540 MW plants from August, when the TAPP-3 also goes for commercial production.

Other neighbouring states which will be getting power from Tarapur include Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Goa and Daman and Diu.

TAPP-3 and TAPP-4 were built at a cost of Rs 6,100 crore although it had an estimated Rs 8,000 crore and later an approval cost of Rs 6,525 crore.

Because of the reduction in total cost, due to various methods adopted by NPCIL management, "we are further trying to reduce the tariff below Rs 2.50," Kakodkar said.

The de-escalation of cost was possible by doing the project ahead of time and TAPP-3 was completed seven months ahead of target time, he said.

NPCIL is also in the process of upgrading the 540 MW units to 700 MW, he added.

Chairman and Managing director of NPCIL said, "we have 70:30 debt equity ratio. At the mid-construction level, the cost revision was done and we could save Rs 400 crore."
