Two letters were shot off to PM on Airports and Balco by Brinda Karat and Chittabrata Majumdar.

NEW DELHI: The comrades are active again. Back from the gruelling election campaign and on the eve of Parliament's brief, politburo and Rajya Sabha members Brinda Karat and Chittabrata Majumdar shot off separate letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on privatisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports and disinvestments of residual shares of the government in Bharat Aluminium Company (Balco) on Monday.

Brinda Karat urged the Prime Minister to clarify in Parliament whether the empowered Group of Ministers (eGoM) for modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports had exceeded its terms by changing the criteria for selection of bidders. Karat demanded that the handing over of these airports to private-led joint venture firms be kept on hold till the issue was clarified in Parliament and clinched by the Supreme Court. She requested the PM "intervene and clarify the issue on the floor of the House" before the Supreme Court takes up the case on June 1 on a petition filed by Reliance Airport Developers.

She accused civil aviation minister Praful Patel of evading a reply on the issue on the floor of Parliament in the last session. Karat also added that  putting the transfer of the two major airports on hold would have no impact on the ongoing revamp and refurbishing jobs now being undertaken by the Airports Authority of India.

Majumdar in his letter requested the PM to stop the disinvestment of residual shares of the government in Balco. "The process of disinvestment of residual stake in Balco should also be reviewed due to questionable asset valuation during disinvestments of 2001, which is yet to be vetted by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India as per assurance in Parliament," Majumdar said.
