WASHINGTON: United States President George W Bush named General Michael Hayden, deputy to national intelligence director John Negroponte, as CIA chief on Monday.

Hayden replaces Porter Goss, who resigned under pressure on Friday.

US lawmakers, some from Bush's Republican party, voiced concern at the weekend about the choice of Hayden over his ties to a controversial eavesdropping program.

Bush called on the US Senate to confirm the Air Force general promptly.

"Mike knows our intelligence community from the ground up. He has been both a provider and a consumer of intelligence," Bush said at the White House.

"He has demonstrated an ability to adapt our intelligence services to the new challenges of the war on terror," the US leader said.

"He's the right man to lead the CIA at this critical moment in our nation's history."
