Woman gets life sentence for killing husband

Sessions court has sentenced a 21-year-old woman to life imprisonment for killing her husband out of her extra-marital affair.  Jyoti Malusare was accused of killing Vijay, her husband, by giving him sleeping pills in his glass of milk.

As per the prosecution, Jyoti and Vijay got married on May 9, 2007 and were living in suburban Ghatkopar with Vijay's parents. A month after their wedding, on June 14, 2007, Jyoti gave Vijay a glass of milk before going to sleep at night. Next morning Jyoti raised alarm, saying that Vijay was not waking up. He was taken to hospital, but was declared dead.

His brother lodged a police complaint suspecting that it was a case of murder. When he returned home, Jyoti confessed to have murdered her husband by first giving him sleeping pills and later strangling him with towel.

Prosecution alleged that Jyoti conspired with her former lover, one Prakash (name changed), to kill Vijay as the two wanted to marry, but court acquitted the latter for lack of evidence. Additional sessions judge VS Murkute convicted Jyoti and awarded her life sentence on October 28.
