If you are suffering from respiratory infections, have bouts of sneezing or a throat infection and severe body aches, blame it on the weather. With the onset of winter and the huge variation in the day and night temperatures, cases of upper respiratory tract infections, viral fever, severe body aches and asthma attacks are on the rise.

According to doctors, elderly people, children and those with known history of illnesses like bronchial asthma, arthritis need to be especially careful.

"The maximum cases that I have seen are of severe body ache and joint pains. Besides that people with pre-existing conditions like sinusitis or asthma have reported attacks in last week. I have also seen many cases of a particular kind of viral fever, in which the platelet count of patient has dropped and it stays longer than usual," said family physician Dr Avinash Bhondwe.

Cases of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) are especially on the rise, say doctors warning people not to visit crowded places if are unwell to prevent spreading infections to others.

Dr Suhas Nene said that most people have symptoms of allergic infections. "Last week, there has been spurt in patients with URTI infections with flu like symptoms. Fever and sore throat are most common symptoms. If adequate care is not taken, especially among the elderly, pneumonia can be developed too," he said.

Koregaon Park-based Dr SZ Anwar said that people should exercise caution against taking strong antibiotics. "People should take warm fluids, plenty of liquids and rest. These infections are self-limiting and usually there is no need for strong medication. If fever and sore throat persists for more than 48 hours, doctor's advice should be sought. The only exception is for those suffering from asthma, they should intensify their therapy without waiting for attack to happen or any problem to occur,'' he said.

The elderly have also been advised to delay their walk by 30-45 minutes after dawn to avoid extremely cold temperatures and also do a warm-up before exercise.
