When gangsters are abused, they rarely sit back and listen, and do nothing about it. But Faheem Khan, a key Chhota Shakeel gang member, had to put up with a common man’s expletives, and he could do nothing about it.

The story dates back to 2006 when Khan, alias Machmach, made an extortion call to a South Mumbai businessman and the phone was picked by his employee, who abused the gangster for lacking manners.

The alleged conversation, intercepted in 2006, between Machmach and the employee, Kartik*, was played out in the special MCOCA court last Monday and it tickled everyone present there, including lawyers for the accused. Kartik deposed before the court last Monday.

Khan, shown wanted in the case, allegedly tried to extort Rs50 lakh from the businessman, Suresh*, by threatening to kill him. But the first call Khan made to Suresh on May 25, 2006 was not smooth at all.

Kartik picked the call, as Suresh was out of India. As per the transcripts submitted in the court, Khan started abusing him right away. Kartik tried talking politely to him, but to no avail.

Kartik then lost his cool. “I work for Suresh, not you. Why should I suffer your abuse?” he said. A string of abuses follow from both ends, after which Khan asks him: “Do you know who I am?”
Kartik retorts: “You may be Savarkar, for all I care. I was just giving a message. Why are you abusing me?”

Khan then allegedly threatened to send “his boys” and warned him: “You better save yourself, Suresh and your staff. I am talking on behalf of Shakeel bhai. I will kill you, your seth (boss) and your staff.”

Khan then made some reference about God, Kartik cheekily replied: “I am more worried about God than you are. If you are sending your boys, ensure they are clean.” He also said: “We are not wearing bangles here.”

The source of the frustration becomes apparent when Kartik said, “There is a problem with the employees’ union here. I haven’t got my salary, and you are just simply shouting at me. I am only taking messages here.”

A few days later, Khan allegedly threatened Suresh on the phone and demanded Rs50 lakh. Finally, Suresh registered a complaint with the anti-extortion cell after which six people were arrested. Suresh is likely to depose on January 15.
