Wet Saturday throws traffic out of gear

Waterlogging in low-lying areas leads to traffic jams on major roads, trains unaffected; expect heavy rain today.

Heavy torrential rains in Mumbai on Saturday killed six people  and left one person injured after a tree fell on an autorickshaw. The city was thrown out of gear with waterlogged roads causing traffic jams.

While a man’s body was found in an open gutter at Worli, one Vitthat Kadam, who had gone to immerse a Ganpati idol, was saved from drowning by a lifeguard at Girgaum Chowpatty on Friday night.

Meanwhile, in Sewri, five children died when a godown wall at Jubilee Mill collapsed on them on Saturday.

The rain, which appears to be ruining a second consecutive weekend for Mumbaikars also led to water logging in the city’s low-lying areas. Water logging was reported in parts of Dadar station (East), Hindmata, Wadala. Maheshwari Udyan, Matunga station, Sion Circle, Sewri, Kalachawki, Lower Parel , Juhu, Khar station, Khar subway, Milan subway, Saat Rasta, Shell colony-Chembur, Andheri, Malad, Ghatkopar and Vikhroli.

In addition potholes on major roads added to travellers woes. The Western Express Highway was jammed for at least an hour in the afternoon. Malad, Borivli and Andheri station road also experienced slow traffic due to water-logging. Minor traffic jams were reported at Peddar Road, Babulnath, JJ flyover, Andheri, Wadala, Ghatkopar and Haji Ali in the peak hours. The Eastern Express Highway at Chunabhatti,Sion, Chembur and Ghatkopar also saw slow-moving traffic.

Seven incidents of fallen trees were also reported.

Trains however were unaffected, with certain trains running behind schedule..

The city received 28.5mm rainfall, while eastern and western suburbs received 49.8 and 37.6mm of rain respectively.

The Met department’s predicts heavy to very heavy rains are expected in parts of the city and suburb area. On Sunday, the high tide will start at 4.38am and low tide will be at 10.20 in the night.
