Three days of continuous rain not only crippled the life in the city, but also spoiled shopping plans of people ahead of two major festivals-Ganeshotsav and Eid. Heavy rain forced people to stay indoors. Both Eid and Ganesha Chaturthi fall on Thursday.

According to traders, the continuous downpour in the weekend resulted in loss of about Rs 85 crore as people stayed indoors ahead of Ganapati festival and Eid.

“People preferred to stay indoors because of water-logging in several parts of the city. This was the last weekend before both the festivals. Generally people step out in large number in the last weekend before the festivals for shopping,” said Mahesh Halwai, owner of Rameshwar Dughdhalay, Lalbaug.

Ganesh idol shops also saw a low turnout. Vijay Khatu, an idol maker, said: “We are seeing less number of people coming to take Ganesha idols because of the heavy rain. With two days remaining, we generally have high turn-out of people.”

PN Jain, a trader from Lalbaug who deals with clothes for Ganapati decoration, said: “We were expecting more people in the weekend. However, we hardly got any because of the continuous downpour. Hopefully, the business will pick up in the next two days.”

Heavy rains have also damaged arrangements made by mandals. “Because of water-logging, we have to put extra wooden platform on the ground,” said Rajendra Lanjwal, treasurer, Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganesha Mandal.

While the heavy rains have not dampened the Ramzan shopping, it has affected the eatery joints selling Ramzan delicacies. Iqbal Bhai, a vendor at Mahim, said: “Peoples prefer to stay indoors in the night and have home food. The rains have affected our Ramzan business this time.”
