With an aim to clean up the city, plant trees and promote greenery, the Wanavdi Residents Forum (WRF) on March 16 launched its project on green surroundings titled ‘One hour a week’. This was supported by organisations like Tarun Bharat Sangh headed by Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Rajendra Singh, Samarth Bharat Vyaspeeth and the apex body National Society for Clean Cities.

Susan Raj, a member of the forum, told DNA that the project is aimed at making Pune, a zero garbage city. “So far, we have 100 volunteers and 35 registered members for this project who will meet every week to clean the garbage. We will start from the rivulets that have become the main dumping place for garbage.’’

“Rivulets are originally meant to be beautiful and are created to add to the nature’s beauty but Pune city’s nalas have not just become a dumping zone but also present an image of gutters comprising garbage. This is happening because we are not decomposing the garbage in the right way,’’ she explained.

Talking about the campaign, KM Advani, also one of the members of the forum and chairman of the Raheja Garden Society, said, “With this project, we volunteers plan to meet every week on Saturdays and identify a place to be cleaned up. In this initiative, we have also involved the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) sewage waste management department that will help us by providing gloves, masks and equipment for cleaning up the garbage.’’

“We don’t want to just clean up the city but want to develop gardens also. This will be done by planting trees near the cleaned up rivulets for which we have even received permission from
PMC officials,’’ said Advani.

“We will also extend this project to other societies in Pune and involve many volunteers and residents who will help in making this movement a reality," he added.
