A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court last week convicted two CBI officers who had allegedly taken bribe from a businessman 10 years ago. The officers had told the businessman that an Interpol warrant was pending against him.

Special CBI judge Ashwinikumar Deore sentenced Chandrashekhar Dabke and IS Parkar to two years’ rigorous imprisonment.

The case was initiated by the anti-corruption wing of the CBI. The complainant, Jayanti Mistri, a Borivili businessman, had told the court that the two demanded bribe from him to arrest him for a crime he had never committed.

Mistri told the court that he had a business in trading and discounting. In 1998, he had deposited a cheque from a client in his account; it later transpired that the cheque was forged. He was arrested by Dabke who was then a Central Excise officer. Mistri was later released on bail.

In December 1998, Dabke visited Mistri and told him that there was an Interpol warrant against him because he had cheated someone in the UAE.

Dabke then told Mistri that his friend Parkar, who was then an inspector with the Economic Offences Wing of the CBI, was going to execute the warrant. On December 5, 1998, Dabke and Parkar allegedly went to Mistri’s house again and even showed him an “Interpol warrant’’ and demanded Rs1 lakh for not arresting him.

Mistri lodged a complaint with the anti-corruption wing of the CBI.

On December 22, 1998, Mistri went to New Excelsior cinema to pay the amount. The CBI-ACB officers caught the accused accepting the bribe.
