The outgoing director general of police (DGP), D Sivanandan, expressed concern over Maharashtra having one of the highest number of custodial deaths in the country, which affects the lowest strata of society.

Sivanandan was in the city to preside over a farewell parade organised in his honour at the Pune police parade ground in Sivajinagar on Saturday morning.

In his address to fellow policemen, Sivanandan said, “Supervision and constant watch needs to be increased to avoid custodial deaths in the state.”

While interacting with the media after the parade, Sivanandan, who was appointed as the Mumbai police commissioner after the 26/11 terror attack, preferred to evade queries related to the German Bakery blast investigation and the working of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS).

Sivanandan said, “I do not want to be involved in controversies at the end of my service. The authorities concerned should be approached with these queries.”

Sivanandan, a 1976-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, regretted not becoming the commissioner of police in Pune and also the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) commandant.

While addressing his colleagues, he said, “I had served as the deputy commissioner of police in Pune in 1980s and had a wish to become the commissioner of Pune and commandant of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF). But this wish was not fulfilled.”

The farewell parade, commanded by deputy commissioner of police (Headquarter II), Rajesh Bansode, involved the participation of six platoons of the Quick Response Team (QRT), traffic police personnel, SRPF personnel and the rural police.

Pune police commissioner, Meeran Borwankar; joint commissioner of police, Ashok Dhiware; special inspector general of police (CID), MK Karve; director of Maharashtra Intelligence Academy, Rajendra Singh; special inspector general of police, SRPF, Pune, SA Kakkar and other senior officers received the DGP at the headquarters.
