A three-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by an 18-year-old boy in Goregaon (East) on Friday night.

Baburam (name changed) took the girl to a secluded place when she was standing on the road watching the Ganesh immersion procession outside her building.

The police said the incident took place on Friday between 8.30 and 9.30pm when the victim and her five-year-old sister were watching the immersion procession outside their building near the Goregaon flyover on the Western Express Highway.

The processions were going towards Aarey Colony.

As the crowd started increasing, the sisters lost sight of each other.

"After searching for some time, the elder sister returned home thinking her sister might have reached home. But when she found that her sister had not come, she told her parents," said a police officer.

"The family panicked and they informed the policemen standing on the road to control the crowd. People passing under the flyover heard a girl crying. They informed the constables standing on the road," said police inspector Dhamaji Nalawade of the Goregaon (East) police station.

"The constables found the girl unconscious and covered with blood. They also saw the boy trying to escape but they managed to nab him with the help of people," said Nalawade.

"The girl's parents too reached the bridge and identified their daughter. We immediately rushed the girl to a nearby hospital," said another officer.  "But as she was critical, she was shifted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Hospital at Andheri where she died on Saturday morning," said Nalawade.

During interrogation, the boy told the police that he took the girl under the flyover, saying her he would take her near the Ganpati immersion site.

"He raped the girl and when she started crying for help, he hit her head with a stone that led to her death," added Nalawade.

"The accused is unemployed. He used to live with his parents in Thane. After his parents shifted to their native place in Uttar Pradesh, he lived alone in the city," said officer.

The police have charged him with kidnapping, rape and murder.

He was remanded in police custody till September 12.
