Once a ‘crooked face Gandhi’ is ‘not always the crooked face Gandhi.’ At least Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray think so about Anna Hazare.

In an editorial written in the party mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray has supported Hazare but not without giving some advice.

“Anna Hazare is in Delhi on Jantar Mantar and is targeting leaders only from Maharashtra. He better not talk about village’s sarpanch or patil while sitting in Jantar Mantar. Those who have destroyed the country by the acts of corruption are sitting in Janpath and Akbar Road. You are sitting in Delhi, so sharpen your agitation with nation in mind, only then something will come out of it,” wrote Thackeray in Saamna.

Agriculture minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar, on Wednesday, turned out to be the first victim of Hazare’s indefinite fast in Delhi, which he has announced will continue till the government proves its commitment to fighting corruption with a powerful new law - the Jan Lokpal Bill or Citizen’s Ombudsman Bill. Pawar resigned from the group of ministers (GoM) on corruption after being held up as an example by Hazare of a corrupt minister who is a member of the government body considering measures to check graft.

Sena chief in the past had called Hazare ‘crooked face Gandhi’ when following his allegations of corruption on three ministers — Shashikant Sutar, Mahadeo Shivankar and Baban Gholap of the then Sena-Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) alliance government. Sutar and Shivankar had to leave the government following the allegations.

Thackeray in his article has particularly targeted Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son-in-law Robert Wadhera, but has not even mentioned Pawar or NCP’s name anywhere.

“Sonia Gandhi and her family are the real protectors of corruption. Everybody knows how Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law, Robert Wadhera’s wealth increased in the last few years. All this money is from corruption,” said Thackeray. The NCP leadership in the state is already feeling that Hazare’s movement is an attempt to malign Pawar’s image.

Targeting Congress leadership directly over the charges of corruption, but missing to comment anything on NCP, Thackeray is said to have supported Pawar, with whom he shares personal relations.
