Students and political parties created a ruckus on Friday at the Chinai College, Andheri, when around 119 students who were not allowed to write their internal exam, on the basis of poor attendance, went on a rampage inside the college.

Even though the Mumbai University enquiry committee report had stated that the college could sympathise with the cause of the defaulting students, on the very first day of the exams, the college did not allow debarred students from appearing for their Environmental Studies paper.

“We have not received any instructions from the university or the government to allow the debarred students to sit for exams, so we did not allow them,” said Malini Johari, principal, Chinai College.

The college management’s decision to debar the students from first, second and third year students of the B.Com course came after these students failed to complete the eligibility criterion of 75% attendance in the college.

The activists, however are claiming that the management is trying to close down its junior and senior college and wants to use the land for other commercial purposes. Following the Yuva Sena’s violent agitations, the college was forced to cancel the examination.

“There have been systematic efforts from the management for past five years to close down the college by using different tricks,” said Amol Kirtikar, general secretary, Yuva Sena.

However, college principal said, “We issue a blacklist of students every month. And we had also informed the parents of these students in January. Also, students giving ‘cultural activities as an excuse were not spared because, such activities are ‘extra curricular and should be attended only after college hours and not in between lectures.”
