He has been remanded in police custody till March 1. Memjade, a resident of Wanavdi, is said to have raped the standard V school girl on February 23 during the lunch recess.
Agitated parents and local politicians forcefully entered the school on Saturday morning and broke windowpanes and destroyed school property. They also blackened the resident headmaster’s wife’s face.
The incident came to light when the victim’s mother lodged a first information report (FIR) at the Khadak police station against Memjade on Friday. The victim resides with her parents and two brothers.
In the FIR, the mother has stated that her daughter was a bright student. She also stated that the schoolgirls used to refer to Memjade as ‘uncle’. On the fateful day, when the victim was going to the school toilet, Memjade is said to have taken her into the laboratory, gagged her mouth and raped her. Memjade is said to have threatened the girl, if she revealed the incident.
Senior police inspector of Khadak police station, Ganpat Nikam, said, “We registered a case against Memjade and arrested him from his residence. We are awaiting the medical reports and we are trying to talk to the victim’s classmates and looking for witnesses.’’
Chairman of the school society, BW Robert told DNA on Saturday, “On February 24, the victim’s mother and three other women approached our headmaster and informed him that Memjade had been harassing the victim. But they did not mention the rape. The parents lodged a FIR on Friday."
