In a bid to pressurise the Centre to pass the Lokpal Bill quickly, the country’s social workers and spiritual leaders will hold a protest across 600 districts simultaneously, said social crusader Anna Hazare on Monday. “If the government is serious about curbing corruption, it must pass the Lokpal Bill as soon as possible,” he said.

“Noted social activist Swami Agnivesh, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, yoga guru Baba Ramdev, spiritual leader Shri Shri Ravi Shankar and other leaders are deliberating on the Lokpal Bill to curb corruption and pressurise the government to pass it,” said Hazare.

The Lokpal is an ombudsman who can look into the irregularities committed by government officials and politicians, while redressing the grievances of citizens.

Hazare did not specify when the agitation would take place.
Lashing out at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), he said that the agency had become a tool for the central government. So far, no politician or IAS officer involved in scams had been arrested or prosecuted, Hazare added. He further said that nothing will come out of the Adarsh housing society scam either.

Talking about the Lavasa project, Hazare said, “The people gave their land to the government for the cause of development, but it doled out 145 hectares and later, an additional 372 hectares to the Lavasa Corporation for commercial purposes.”

The government, Hazare said, must explain why land was given to Lavasa, which is also usurping water from Varasgaon dam.

About the proposed nuclear power plant at Jaitapur, he said the government should rehabilitate the displaced people before executing any development project.
