Civic activists in the city have appealed to citizens to support the anti-corruption crusade initiated by Anna Hazare by skipping a meal and joining the protest opposite the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) building for a few hours on Friday.

Anna Hazare’s supporters, under the banner of the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Jan Andolan (BVJA) Pune, have been fasting before the PMC building to support the agitation by Hazare in New Delhi.

On Thursday, activists KD Pawar (BVJA), Vinita Deshmukh (RTI Forum for Instant Information), Vijay Kumbhar (Surajya Sangharsha Samiti), Sandeep Khardekar (Creative Foundation) and Satish Khot (National Society for Clean Cities) made an appeal to citizens to join the agitation.

Deshmukh told media persons that ever since Hazare started his fast unto death to get the Jan Lokpal Bill passed, many citizens in Pune have expressed support. They have been interested in joining the agitation.

Deshmukh said that to support Hazare, Puneites should sacrifice any one meal on Friday: breakfast, lunch or dinner. According to her, Hazare’s supporters were already on fast at the entry gate of the PMC building. “Citizens should come to the venue to express solidarity for the campaign and sign the petition. They should come in large numbers with family and friends from 9 am to 10 pm,” Deshmukh said.
