The Sena MPs led by senior parliamentarian Manohar Joshi also gave a memorandum to the prime minister asking him to take steps to stop "atrocities being done by the Government of Maharashtra" against the people opposing the project.
"The letter given to the prime minister said that the nuclear power project, which is proposed to be started at Jaitapur, should be stopped immediately," Joshi told reporters outside the Parliament House.
Clarifying that the party is not against the development of the state, Joshi said, "The people where such type of projects are undertaken should be taken into confidence."
The central government has approved construction of a 9,900 MW nuclear project at Jaitapur in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.
"The project is no doubt very important. At the same time the affected people are absolutely against the project. Therefore, Shiv Sena is with the people of Jaitapur. And unless and until, the people are satisfied, the project should not be taken ahead," Joshi said.
"The atrocities which are being done by the government of Maharashtra against the agitators should also be stopped immediately," he said.
Joshi said the response by the prime minister was "very good" and added that he agreed "in principle" that no atrocities should be done against the agitators.
"He agreed with us that any big project with this size in the country, whenever the project is to be done, the people of the area should be taken into confidence," Joshi said.
