Teachers and educationalists should look for and nurture special talent in their students, instead of worrying about their academic grades, said Padmabhushan VS Ramamurthy.

The director of National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) delivered the inaugural address at the XXth capacity-building programme for institution leaders at the Indian Institute of Education, Kothrud, on Monday.

Ramamurthy exhorted principals and directors of institutes to realise the potential among students and have the vision to pick out the ones with exceptional skills and nurture them.

“In European countries and even the US, there is a special programme dedicated to children with exceptional skills. These children are picked out of schools and put into this programme and their skills are nurtured,” Ramamurthy said.

“In India, on the other hand, if a child has a special talent, no one comes forward to nurture it. The child’s parents are happy to see him on TV once, but the teachers have no clue on what to do for the student. All they bother about is grades,” he added.

He appealed to principals to recognise talent and develop it in children. “Look beyond what you’re expected to do to justify your salaries. If you can’t bring a change in the education system, at least keep talking about it so your voice gets heard,” he exhorted the teaching community.

The week-long event will see principals of institutions from across the country visit colleges, universities and even rural centres as a part of study group and attend lectures and workshops by eminent educationalists in Pune.
