A beautiful sculpture of Sai Baba cooking for devotees attracts the attention of visitors at the Sai Palkhi Nivara at Nimgaon, 1km from Shirdi. Designed by Pune-based sculptor, Jitendra Sutar, it has become a crowd-puller.
It took him five months to design the sculpture in fibreglass. The 15-ftx25-ft piece of art was completed recently. The Sai Palkhi Nivara has been constructed by Om Shri Sai Dham Mandir Trust, Virar (Mumbai), to provide lodging and meals to devotees.
The sculpture adorns the outer wall of the main building near the place where prasad is served to the devotees. It shows Sai Baba putting his hand in a big cauldron to stir the food being prepared for poor people.
A resident of Dhayari, 34-year-old Sutar has completed his education in fine arts at the Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai. He also got an art teacher diploma from Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune. He was awarded a gold medal at the annual exhibition at the Sir JJ School of Art and later won awards at various exhibitions.
His works were exhibited at shows in Jehangir Art gallery and Nehru Centre in Mumbai, at Balgandharva Kaladalan in Pune and other places.
Sutar has also done murals and sculptures for Tatyasaheb Kore Institute, Kolhapur, and for Suzlon. He wishes to work on a sculpture on Sinhagad Road. “It feels nice to work on murals and sculptures with a historic theme. I would like to make a sculpture on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji on Sinhagad Road,” he said.
Though the abstract designs are more popular, the traditional sculptures with a theme too are widely liked, he stated. He also works on metal and wooden carvings.
