The design of the upcoming nuclear power plant at Jaitapur in coastal Maharashtra will be location-specific, and safety will not be compromised at any level, Nuclear Power Corporation of India said today.

"The design for the proposed 1650 MW plant is yet to evolve as the design for any nuclear plant is location-specific," said CB Jain, Jaitapur project director at NPCIL.

Jaitapur meets the International Atomic Energy Agency's norms regarding distance from earthquake-zones, he said.

Asked whether there would be a rethinking in the case of Jaitapur after the nuclear crisis in Japan, he said, "There is no going back on that, the plant will be built with additional provisions...If needed, additional provisions can be made in the basic design too."

S Thakur, former executive director, Corporate Planning, NPCIL, said, "Indian programmes can not be calibrated on what is happening in Japan and there is no change in thinking in our power programme, between last week and today."
