The Orissa crime branch has requested the Mumbai police to help it in the investigation of a case against the Bollywood actor-cum-producer Naseer Khan for his involvement in a chit-fund scam that could amount up to Rs500 crore.
Crime branch sleuths suspect that money collected through fraudulent means was invested in the film Shadow in which Khan, a visually challenged person, played the lead role. He was also the producer of the film. The money was transferred to the account of the film’s production house Great Entertainment.
The crime branch has frozen the accounts of Naseer, his company Fineindia and another company, which amounts to Rs191 crore. It has also alerted its counterparts in Kanpur, Delhi and Jeypore to remain alert. Cases have been lodged against another six people including the co-producer of the film Samser Alam.
Police sources maintained that Khan along with six others floated many companies, one of which had a website named
www.fineindia.com, now in controversy. The police said that through this website, the accused had lured customers by assuring huge interests through investment in the chit fund. An entire chain was made and people were assured that their money would be doubled within a span of two years. People from Balasore, Bhadrak,
Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Kolkata, Kanpur, Jeypore and Mumbai were fleeced through the website, said the police.
“We have definite proof that Naseer was involved in this sensational scam,” said Orissa crime branch IG Arun Ray on Wednesday. “The crime branch has filed a case against Fineindia, in which Naseer is a board director,” said Ray, adding that the chit-fund scam could touch a whopping Rs500 crore.
