Rs1 crore meant for women’s loos go abegging in Pune

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration on Thursday admitted that it failed to utilise money from the budgetary provision of Rs1 crore in the current financial year for building public toilets for women.

during the general body (GB) meeting.

Civic officials assured the GB that they would provide information on the issue in the next GB. Hence, there was discussion on the matter on Thursday.

When deputy commissioner Suresh Jagtap provided statistics on the public toilets and urinals for women, members asked to provide specific information about the use of budgetary allocation for the purpose.

Replying to a question by BJP corporator Vikas Mathkari, the official accepted that funds were not utilised during the first 11 months of the current fiscal. Jagtap said public toilets for women were not built due to the lack of space for them.

Leader of house Nilesh Nikam said there are a number of public gardens in the city. Also, the civic body owns plots in various locations. Public urinals could be built at these places.

Nikam said additional municipal commissioner Naresh Zurmure should ensure that at least 100 such conviniences are built at public places in the city. Former deputy mayor Dilip Barate said the lack of public toilets for women was a very serious issue and the municipal commissioner should address it.

BJP group leader Mukta Tilak said the civic administration has not utilised funds for public toilets till February. Had corporators not raised the issue, the funds would have not been used in the current financial year also. Estimates for the work have not been prepared yet.

Ujwal Keskar expressed concern about the lack of public toilets for women and criticised the administration.

Municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade admitted that there were not enough public toilets for women in the city, which was a serious issue. He said he would direct zonal commissioners to ensure building of public toilets.
