Heavy air traffic congestion over the Mumbai airport during peak hours has kept both passengers and airlines distraught.

Assessment of the latest DGCA figures by experts states that one of the primary reasons for the poor On-Time Performance of airlines is congestion.

Mumbai airport is considered among the busiest airports in Asia with passenger traffic of around 30 million passengers, which is growing at a pace of over 14%. Aviation experts say that traffic congestion reaches its peakduring the evening hours and result in quite a few planes hovering over the airport, waiting for the signal to land. For passengers, it means an endless wait while for airlines, the burning fuel costs crores of rupees.

On-Time Performance (OTP) is one of the important parameters to judge the efficiency of an airline, and Mumbai airport holds top position among the six metros as far poor OTP goes.

Technical failure of the aircraft, Air Traffic Control (ATC), security, operational delays and passenger problems are some of the other reasons leading to delay, add the experts.

According to the data available with the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the month of April, national carrier Air India (Domestic) has an OTP of 73.9% in Mumbai, which is the lowest among the six metros of Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata.

The OTP of Jet Airways, which is the largest airline in India in terms of the number of passengers it carries, and its low cost airline, Jetlite, is a mere 78.8% in Mumbai. The performance of Jet Airways at Delhi was only slightly better.

Indigo, one of the leading low cost airlines, and the only one making profits, showed an OTP of 80.8% at Mumbai airport, way behind its OTP when it flies to other metros.

Hyderabad-headquartered SpiceJet, another low cost airline, had an OTP of 73.6% at Mumbai, which was just better than that at Chennai airport, where the OTP stood at 65.7%.  The figures indicate a similar situation for Kingfisher airlines and GoAir, whose OTP stood second and third at Mumbai airport, with 79.6% and 81.1% respectively.
