The much-awaited Britannia pumping station at Reay Road was touted as a solution for water logging woes in the south-central Mumbai areas like Byculla, Lalbaug, Parel, Dadar (East). But the work on this pumping station has been stalled as BMC law does not allow the civic body to take land on lease from a third party.

The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) Authority has agreed to provide land for the project at Britannia Outfall to pump out flood water from the area. “MbPT has agreed to give about 2,200 sq ft of land in the Retibunder area to the BMC for the pumping plant, but the BMC cannot take possession of land as the rules say BMC cannot lease land from a third party,” said an official from Storm Water Department.

The proposed pumping station at Reay Road will benefit the area from Dadar fire station to Dattaram Lad Marg in east Lalbaug, including the Hindmata Junction and parts of Byculla. The construction of the pumping station was supposed to start by October or November, and it was expected that the pumping station would be ready by mid-2012.

The Love Grove and Cleveland pumping stations, once completed, will minimise flooding and water-logging in Mahalaxmi, Worli, Lower Parel and Elphinston Road.

After the 2005 deluge destroyed the city’s property worth crores and claimed about 700 lives, the Chitale Committee recommended setting up of pumping stations in Mumbai to discharge flood waters into the sea during high tide.

The recommendations stated that the BMC proposed four pumping stations at Haji Ali, Love Grove, Cleaveland Bunder (Worli) and Irla. After reviewing the flood situation, the BMC decided to build two more pumping stations, at Gajdhar Bandh, Santa Cruz and Britannia Nulla, Reay Road.

The BMC has started work only at Haji Ali and at Love Grove in Worli.
