Rapist’ doctor wants to marry victim: Police

“My son is innocent,” said Harpal Singh, father of Dr Rahul Deshwal, the resident medical officer at St George’s Hospital, who was arrested by the MRA Marg police on Tuesday for allegedly raping a medical student. “My son cannot be involved in such a heinous crime,” Singh claimed.

Deshwal was remanded in police custody till July 14 by a local court on Wednesday. According to a police official, after his arrest, Deshwal agreed to marry the victim who is an MBBS student from JJ Hospital. “But the victim wants to fight the case and is not accepting his proposal. We believe Deshwal suddenly had a change of heart because he thought he could get out of the case,” the official said.

The police are waiting for the medical report of the victim. “We are waiting for the forensic reports of the clothes and other materials seized from Deshwal’s room,” said Sanjeev Kokil, senior police inspector. Since it is believed that Deshwal had exploited other girls as well, the police have appealed to female students who were his victims to register a complaint.
