Heavy rain continued to lash the city for the third consecutive day on Monday, throwing normal life out of gear. The Maximum City also received the maximum rain of the month in the last 24-hours.

The 24-hour period between Sunday and Monday turned out to be the wettest day of the month with Santa Cruz receiving 232.6 mm of rainfall and Colaba 178.6 mm.

The city is likely to see more rains in the next 48 hours. “The weather conditions are pointing to another round of heavy rain. But as we have seen the rain intensity is declining by the day, it is expected to further plunge after August 31,” said VK Rajeev, IMD director (western region). MET officials have appealed to the fishermen not to venture into the sea.

This month has so far seen peak of monsoon. In August alone, Colaba has recorded 675.8mm of rainfall and Santa Cruz 796.8mm. A high tide of 4.63 meters on Monday, left the city on a water ride.

Dadar, Colaba, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Bandra, Kurla, Chembur were the areas which received the maximum rainfall.

The incessant rain also badly affected the road, rail and air traffic. Passengers on the Western Express Highway were stranded for at least two hours in the afternoon.

The traffic came to standstill on the Eastern Express Highway at Sion, Chembur and Ghatkopar were jam. The incessant rain and water from Mithi river flooded the tracks on the central and harbour line, delaying trains by at least 30 minutes.

The heavy rain also forced the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to close schools for the day. The rain caused loss of live and properties.

A landslide at Tardeo, near Heera Panna market claimed one life, while incidents of tree uprooting reported across Mumbai, leaving three people injured.

Champabai Bhise (65), Darshana Kharat (33) and Kareem Shaikh (35) were injured when the tree fell on their auto-rickshaw. A house collapsed at Kasaiwada of Kurla.

However, no one injured. Two major lakes, Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna, are now just few notch away from overflowing.

Bhatsa is 0.87 meter less from being full to the brim, while Upper Vaitarna is 0.39 meter less than its maximum limit.
