Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s statement about the Maval firing can lead to widening the rift between the two ruling parties, the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), in the state. Rahul said that there was no need for firing on the agitating farmers in Maval two weeks ago.

The Congress and NCP have been justifying the Maval firing that claimed lives of three protesting farmers from day one. Home minister RR Patil told the state legislature that the firing was inevitable. He later claimed that an unidentified person had first opened fire which escalated the tension on both sides.

Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar also claimed that the BJP had pre-planned the violent agitation in Maval.

Rahul’s statement on Thursday has isolated the NCP that holds the home portfolio and also the guardian ministership of the district in which the firing took place. The onus of the firing has now been put completely on the NCP’s shoulders.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan had stated soon after the Mumbai blast on 13th July, that it was a blunder to hand over the home portfolio to NCP.

Furious NCP leaders had taken up the issue with the party high command. They had also raised the issue of the inept handling by the urban development department controlled by Congress in the wake of Adarsh scam. The differences between two parties have become visible since then.

The fresh attack on the NCP by Rahul may further escalate the rift between two parties.

CM Chavan, soon after the Rahul’s statement, admitted that the firing was not justifiable. “The order of judicial probe in the firing proves that we are not justifying the incident. What Rahul said was right,” he said.

Ironically, both chief minister Chavan and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar had tried to shift the responsibility for the firing on the BJP’s shoulders saying that it was a plot orchestrated by the party. However, Chavan changed his stand soon after Rahul’s statement.

RR Patil, on Thursday, said that he never justified the firing and was of the opinion that the farmers should never be treated with bullets. “We are taking all the efforts to avoid any such incidents in future,” he said.
