Extending a helping hand to needy students to achieve their dreams, Durgadevi Charitable Trust and Rotary Club of Pune North distributed scholarships to 480 students from 13 villages on Sunday.

The trust is working in the field of education since 2002. Each student was awarded a scholarship of Rs1,500 for a year. The beneficiaries included students of standard VIII, IX and X from Narayangaon, Khed, Junnar, Mahad, Goregaon, Khadakwasla, Bhor, Satara, Baramati, Daund, Karjat, Patalganga and Shrivardhan.

This assistance by the trust and the club mattered to these students, which was evident from the reactions of the students and teachers. Headmaster of Dev High School, Narayangaon, Mahendra Ganphule, said the gap between the haves and have-nots has to be bridged through such projects.

Krishna Kale from Tukdoji Vidyalaya, Daund, is son of a labourer. The scholarship helped him to continue with his education. Supriya Kharate of Bhau Bhagwat Vidyalaya said she was obliged for the help and would utilise her education and knowledge for the
betterment of society.

Besides scholarships, the trust also provides assistance for higher education and gives sports scholarship as well. It has been supporting girls and boys’ hostels in rural areas and runs science centres for them.

Educationist NM Joshi urged the students to use their education
for the right cause. He said the
teachers had to shoulder the responsibility of shaping responsible students if we wished to bring
positive change in society.

He urged all to do their bit for the nation and society and the underprivileged around them.

Rotary Club of Pune North president, Ashok Malhotra, and trustees of Durgadevi Trust, Kuldip Joshi and KG Vyanktesh, were present.
