The next time the autorickshaw driver converses with you in English, do not be surprised. He has most probably graduated from the Suryadatta Group of Institute’s six-month free course in English and computer education.

On Saturday, as many as 40 autorickshaw drivers and 40 housewives completed the six-month course in English and computer education with certificates from Suryadatta.

Speaking on the sidelines of the valedictory event held at the Marathi Sahitya Parishad on Tilak Road on Saturday, the institute’s chairperson, Sanjay Chordiya said, “Knowledge of English is essential in the 21st century. The response was tremendous and we are happy to see the enthusiasm
displayed by drivers and housewives to learn the language.”

Former Pune police commissioner Jayant Umranikar in his keynote address said, “Women are the backbone of the family and yet their education sometimes remains neglected. This initiative by Suryadatta will help society keep pace with time.”

While presenting the certificates, a visibly happy rickshaw panchayat president, Baba Adhav said, “This move has not only provided a helping hand but also awakened their learning spirit. I congratulate Suryadatta for this unique initiative.”

A confident Milind Kate, one of the rickshaw drivers, gave a short speech in English. “We are thankful to Suryadatta for giving us this opportunity to learn English. The course started in January this year and was completed on June 24. Today we can speak the language and it has increased our self-confidence. This programme has improved our personality,” Kate said.

Wilson Lobo, another rickshaw driver said, “It’s our privilege to learn English as we come from Marathi background. Now we can converse in English with our customers, especially the
foreigners. The computer training has given us the
basic knowledge which will be beneficial in future.”

“It is a great achievement as most of our time is spent in household chores. We enjoyed the session and today I am much more confident. With basic computer knowledge, we can help our children in their studies,” said Rupali Dhumal, a housewife.
