The alliance between the two saffron parties seems to have hit rock bottom.
With the city unit of the Shiv Sena shooting off a letter to party high command, suggesting that it rethink its ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the alliance between the two saffron parties seems to have hit rock bottom.
The letter was written after the election of BJP’s Ganesh Bidkar as new chairman of the standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
The Sena, which also fielded a candidate in the standing committee election, had asked the BJP to back its candidate. But the BJP camp remained defiant.
Bidkar won the polls with the help of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
Post election, district Sena leaders held a meeting to take stock of the new situation. “Our experience with the BJP in the district has been quite bad. Time and again, the BJP has gone back on its word and sided with parties with whom the Shiv Sena has ideological differences,” said Sena leader in the PMC, Shyam Deshpande.
The district unit has prepared a report on the turn of events and sent it to the headquarters, urging the party high command to review the alliance.
The decision now rests with Shiv Sena supreme, Balasaheb Thackeray, and executive president, Uddhav Thackeray. The latter has been authorised to take a decision on the alliance.
However, BJP leaders seemed unfazed with the
developments.
“As far as we are concerned, the alliance is going on well. We might have differed on some issues, but on the whole I think it should not make a difference to the alliance,” said Mukta Tilak, leader of the BJP in the PMC.
Apparently, this is not the first time that problems have cropped up between the two parties. The parties have differed on several issues like the implementation of the ‘green’ development plan, metro rail project and action against illegal constructions.
