Pune schools qualify for final round of quiz by IIT-Kanpur

The preliminary round of the quiz was held in Nigdi. The final round will be conducted on February 7, 2012, at Outreach Auditorium, Kanpur.

Two Pune schools have qualified for the final round of an inter-school quiz competition on earthquake tips, conducted by IIT-Kanpur’s National Information Centre of Earthquake Engineering of India (NICEE).

The preliminary round of the quiz was held in Nigdi on Thursday. The final round will be conducted on February 7, 2012, at Outreach Auditorium, Kanpur.

Two city schools, City Pride School, Nigdi, and Army Public School, Khadki, participated in the preliminary round of the quiz. The students were from standards VIII to XI.

The City Pride School team comprised Anushka Kulkarni, Manthan Shedge, Sahil Sawant and Gaurav Bhosale; while the Army Public School team consisted of Animesh Aswan, Arnav Jinart and Chanchalkumar Roshan.

The NICEE has always felt the need to include schoolchildren, who are the future builders of the country, in the activity of furthering the cause of seismic safety towards ensuring an earthquake resistant environment in the country.

There was an overwhelming response from schools for the quiz. More than 100 schools from about 50 cities have shown their willingness to participate in the quiz.

The winning team from City Pride School, Nigdi, scored 127 points and Army Public School, Khadki, scored 74 points. The quiz in its third year is conducted annually by NICEE.

Preliminary rounds of the quiz will also be conducted in Lucknow, Indore, Nagpur, Ambala, Chandigarh, Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, New Delhi, Shimla and Jaipur.

The winning teams were felicitated by City Pride School principal Maya Sawant, teacher Shaila Rao and Army Public School teacher S Sinha.
