For the last two years the commuters of Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune areas are facing problems due the incomplete work on the Aundh-Ravet bus rapid transit system (BRTS) route. The work was stalled due to land acquisition problems on the stretch between Aundh and Jagtap Dairy.

Traffic snarls have been taking place at Sangvi Phata, Aundh Civil Hospital, Jagtap Dairy, Kalewadi Phata, Dange Chowk, Tathawade, Punavale, Ravet and PCMC ward-D office areas due to the incomplete work.

Besides, the construction material spread all over the stretch poses a risk to motorists and two-wheeler riders.  Some of the commuters allege that it is extremely difficult to negotiate the stretch, especially during peak hours.

The residents of Sangvi, Pimple Gurav, Pimple Saudagar, Thergaon, Rahatni, Kalewadi and Chinchwad are the worst hit.
Although the defence ministry has given its nod for the route, it has laid a condition that it would provide the land at market rate only. So the civic administration is yet to take any decision on the issue, said Dilip Kudale, spokesperson for the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) engineering department.

Aundh-Ravet is the prime route for those who commute from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad areas. The proposed eight-lane road was to provide connectivity to vehicles heading from Aundh to Mumbai via the expressway, reducing the total travel time from Pune to Mumbai by 20 minutes.

The work order for the Aundh-Ravet BRTS Road was issued on September 9, 2008. The deadline to complete the work was March 9, 2010, but it was extended till December 2010. However, the PCMC was unable to meet the extended deadline also.  The cost of construction of the BRTS route is Rs262 crore. The total length of the road is 14.5km. It was divided in seven sections and the work was assigned to seven different contractors for faster implementation.

From Aundh to Dange Chowk, the width of the proposed road is 45 metres, comprising eight lanes and 30 metres from Dange Chowk to the expressway. The whole Aundh-Ravet BRTS route has a cycle track and footpath on both sides of the road.
