An alleged cheat who tried to marry for the second time was nabbed by the Pune rural police at the marriage pandal itself in Baramati on Friday afternoon.

The prompt action by the police was possible because of the proactive step by the newly appointed Pune rural superintendent of police Sandeep Karnik who has published his cellphone number (9922100333) and invited citizens to call him directly in the event of distress.

The suspect was identified as Santosh Kisan Salve (34), a resident of Hadapsar, who was pursuing his MBA while working in a Pune-based Hindi newspaper in the circulation department as manager.

Santosh was nabbed by the police on Friday around noon after the marriage rituals had begun and he was seated on a ceremonial horse.

The incident came to light when Santosh's wife Priyanka (26) got alarmed after hearing about the news of the marriage from a relative and on receiving a cold response from the police, she called up the rural SP.

Within no time, Karnik directed the Baramati city police station to arrest the suspect.

Priyanka filed an First Information Report (FIR) at the police station and Santosh was charged under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 relating to cheating, adultery and punishment for attempting to commit offence. Sub-inspector Shivaji Kale is investigating the case.

Speaking to DNA, senior inspector Ganesh More in-charge of Baramati police station said, "Santosh and Priyanka had tied the knot on May 9, 2004 and had two daughters aged 4 and 6.

Since two years, they are living separately along with one of the daughters and Santosh in February had filed a case for divorce in the Pune family court. Moreover, the victim with whom Santosh was about to get married too has filed a case of cheating against him.

The victim is in a trauma as this is the second time her marriage has broken down. The victim's family had taken a loan of Rs3 lakh for the marriage and Santosh had met the family in January and informed them that Priyanka was as good as dead for him and that he had just one daughter from her. The victim's family had spent more then Rs2 lakh on the marriage.

Priyanka told DNA, "Our marriage was an arranged marriage and the proposal had come from Santosh who is my relative. After the second delivery, I again gave birth to a girl due to which I was tortured as Santosh and his parents wanted a son. They even took my elder daughter away from me. I was living with the hope that one day, he will return but in March I got a notice of a divorce case filed by him and on July 27, I was directed to come to the court
in Pune.''

"We came to know about his marriage from our relative. I immediately rushed to Baramati along with my parents. Initially the police did not take cognisance but later when we contacted the SP, the action was taken. Santosh was sitting on the horse as if it was his first marriage." she added.

On Saturday, Santosh was produced before the
judicial magistrate (first class) court in Baramati and was granted bail.
