Pune organises exhibition on Swami Vivekananda

Vivek Express, highlighting his life and teachings, is stationed at Khadki station.

The Vivek Express, which is stationed at Khadki railway station, reveals the whole life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda through photographs and literature.

Rare photograph of his palm and his signature, and breathtaking aerial views of Belur Math are the main attractions. The exhibition on the train was inaugurated on Tuesday. It will be open for the public for free from 11 am to 6 pm till August 11.

The exhibition is spread across two air-conditioned coaches of the total five. It aims at spreading awareness about the philosophy of the spiritual leader. It was flagged off by railway minister Mamata Banerjee on January 12 this year and will be touring the country till May 13, 2013 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of swamiji.

Photographs and write-ups on different stages of Swami Vivekananda’s life are on display in two coaches, while three other coaches are for railway personnel accompanying the exhibition.
Born Narendra Nath Dutta on January 12, 1863, Swami Vivekananda’s childhood is depicted through some old photographs.

The photos of his family members including his mother and brothers and his ancestral house are also displayed. The literature explains how as a child, he was inclined towards yoga, meditation and philosophy.

His brief association with the Brahmo movement and meeting with his guru, Ramakrishna Paramhans, is explained in detail. It also traces the story of Ramakrishna Mission and how he set up the organisation that is now devoted to spiritual and educational activities around the
country.

The express has visited 97 cities in West Bengal, Assam, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Goa. Pune is the first city where the exhibition is being held in Maharashtra.
The train will proceed to Mumbai from Pune. More than six lakh people have visited the exhibition in the country so far.
