Upset by the Medical Council of India (MCI)’s plan to hold the national eligibility-cum-entrance test (NEET) test for the MBBS course from 2012, city-based non-governmental organisation, District Entrance Examination Performance Enhancement and Research (Deeper) is planning to file a public interest litigation in the Supreme Court against the holding of the examination.

Deeper is of the view that medical college aspirants from Maharashtra could face difficulties in the NEET 2012 as there is a mismatch in the syllabus followed for NEET and syllabus of the state board. DNA, in its report, ‘NEET: Maha problem for medical college aspirants’ on August 5, had highlighted this issue.
Several educationists in Pune and Kolhapur had expressed concern over the mismatch in the syllabus followed by the NCERT (applicable to NEET) and the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

As per the earlier plan, NEET was to be introduced in 2013 and the state education board had altered its syllabus for mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology for standard XI this year to prepare their students for the 2013 exam. The syllabus for standard XII was to be altered next year in preparation for the 2013 exam.

Speaking to the press on Friday, founder secretary, Deeper, Harish Butle said “NEET will be held for admission to the MBBS course across the country, which was earlier done by MHT-CET for the state. However the state government is not yet clear about admissions to other medical courses like bachelor in ayurvedic
medicine and surgery or nursing.”

Butle said it was not clear whether the state entrance test, MHT-CET, would be conducted. “The chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan, has not responded to our letter dated July 29 seeking clarity on the MHT-CET issue,” Butle said.

He appealed to students and junior colleges to register their objections to the NEET 2012 and urged them to organise a signature campaign and submit it to the chief minister by August 20.
