The budgetary provision for giving scholarship to students of standard X and XII by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is likely to fall short by 60% this year considering the high number of meritorious students and wider publicity given to the scheme.

According to deputy Municipal Commissioner Dnyaneshwar Molak, there is a provision of Rs6 crore for the scheme in the civic budget for 2011-12.

But it is quite likely that there would be more number of applications this year due to the high number of students who have got more than 80% and also due to the wide publicity given to the scheme.

Hence, there might be a requirement of Rs4.5 crore more to provide scholarships to all eligible applicants.

The PMC has invited applications from students of standard X and and XII for its scholarship scheme under which Rs15,000 and Rs25,000 are awarded each to student of standard X and XII respectively.

The civic body started the scholarship scheme in 2008-09 for those students in Pune who have got more than 80% marks in standard X or XII examination.

In the financial year 2010-11, the civic body gave scholarship to 5,278 students of standard X and 973 students of standard XII. In the preceding year (2009-10), 4,032 students of standard X and 676 students of standard XII got the scholarship.

In 2008 -09, when the scheme was launched, 3,051 students of standard X and 485 students of standard XII were the beneficiaries.

In the first year of the scheme, students of standard X were given Rs15,000 and those of standard XII were given Rs25,000 each.

But from the next year, considering the increasing number of applications, the amount was fixed by dividing the budgetary provision by the number of eligible students.

In the last financial year, students of standard X got Rs10,620 each while students of standard XII got Rs17,300 each.

As municipal elections are likely to be held next year, most of the corporators have spread awareness about the scholarship in their respective wards.

It is likely that the number of applications for scholarship would shoot up. Molak said if additional provision is not made for scholarships, then the students would get a lesser amount considering the possibility of high number of applications.

Application forms for the scheme are available in all regional ward offices and offices of corporators. Students can also download the forms from the website of PMC — www.punecorporation.org.

The  filled application forms have to be submitted in the office of urban community development department (UCD) in the building of PMC, Shivajinagar before
