Activists of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) and members of civil society on Friday protested against the formation of Lavasa Corporation’s special planning authority (SPA) and the publication of the draft proposals for the hill station project.

The members of the authority held a hearing in the city on Friday where city NGOs and civil society members raised objections to the project. The SPA had published its draft planning proposals of Lavasa Hill Station project on April 21 and had invited suggestions and objections from people.

A total of 38 objections were received from individuals as well as NGOs and members of civil society.

NBA and Parisar were among the NGOs that filed objections, while town planner Aneeta Gokhale Benninger also filed objections to the plan on Friday.

Benninger also objected to the survey conducted by the special planning authority, claiming it to be in direct contravention of the town planning schemes of the government.

“The town planning schemes for the hilly regions allow only two-storey constructions, while Lavasa Corporation Ltd has constructed four-storey houses, which is a gross violation,” she alleged.

Suniti SR, a member of the NBA, questioned the very formation of the planning authority, as the high court has stayed the construction by the corporation.

She also objected to the 2.5 lakh projected population of the hill station, citing the fragile ecology of the area. The SPA will submit the objections to the state government.
