Until recently, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan was known to be an arch rival of NCP chief Sharad Pawar. But the CM, who was all praises for the Union agriculture minister, released the latter’s biography at the YB Chavan Centre at Nariman Point on Tuesday.

The book, titled Ekmev (the one and only), has been compiled and edited by veteran journalist Madhukar Bhave.

The political rivalry between Chavan and Pawar is well known. Pawar is said to have played a crucial role in ensuring Chavan’s defeat from Satara in the Lok Sabha elections a decade ago.

Chavan himself referred to the differences between the two on Tuesday. He, however, claimed that Pawar was sport enough to leave electoral bitterness behind.

Praising the Maratha strongman for his vision and socio-political abilities, Chavan said that his contribution in taking Maharashtra to the forefront of development was enormous.

“He has always thought about the development and growth of the state and has marvellous command over various fields. He has proved his abilities at the national level as a Union minister for over 15 years. His abilities as a troubleshooter are widely acclaimed in the Congress. But at the same time, he is well aware about the happenings in Maharashtra,” he said.

Chavan added that Pawar was helpful whenever the state faced any crisis. Even in the case of the recent loss of crops due to untimely rains, Pawar has been discussing possible ways out and assistance from the Centre on a regular basis, he said.

“His valuable guidance has always helped us. In future, too, we will keep seeking his help for the state’s welfare.”

Chavan asserted that the package of Rs70,000 crore announced two years ago for the farmers of suicide-prone areas was Pawar’s brainchild. “He proved his skills in balancing the economy and the practicality while drawing such a huge package,” he said.

Pawar’s nephew and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said that his uncle’s policy decisions were a throwback to social reformers like Mahatma Phule, Shahu Maharaj and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. “In that sense, he is really a revolutionary politician,” he said.
