Eight years after having their first son, Prakash and Rashmi Kanango were eagerly looking forward to the arrival of the fourth member in the family. But just two months from her due date for delievery, Rashmi died under mysterious circumstances at a maternity home in Prabhadevi where she was admitted on Tuesday night after she complained of pain in her stomach.

The family has now filed a case against the nursing home as well as the consulting doctor at the Dadar police station alleging medical negligence. “When we took her to the doctor at night she declared her normal and never hinted that we should have made better medical arrangements for her. Why were we kept in the dark? Her condition could not have deteriorated all of a sudden to the extent that she lost her life,” said Rashmi’s husband.

The Dadar police station, however, has primarily recorded the statements of both the parties and has filed an accidental death report (ADR). “We have filed an ADR and are waiting for the postmortem, as well as the chemical analysis report, to decide the further course of action,” said senior inspector AD Unde. “The doctor has given details of the kind of treatment provided to the patient, but since the family has its own suspicions, we have taken all the necessary steps to ascertain the truth,” added Unde.

Rashmi was admitted to Dr Paleps Priyanka Maternity Nursing Home at about 10pm on Tuesday under the supervision of Dr Sujata Dalvi. According to the family, Dalvi checked Rashmi, declared her fit, and left for the day. “She was in pain again at 4pm, so the nurse gave her an injection. Dr Dalvi checked her again at 9am and still said she was fine. But since my wife kept complaining of pain I went to another hospital to check if she can be shifted, but by the time I returned at around 10.30pm, she was no more,” said Kanango.

When contacted, Dr Sujata Dalvi refused to comment. The owner of the nursing home, Dr Hanumant Rao Palep, however, cleared his stand and said, “My hospital is an open nursing home and many surgeons come and operate their patients here. Dr Dalvi had delivered the first child of the deceased lady so she knew the case the best. It is unfortunate that such an incident happened here but I certainly would not know nothing about the case.”
