It looks like controversy has followed actor Vivek Oberoi into the New Year.

On Saturday night, Oberoi and the organisers, Country Club, had to face the wrath of the audience gathered at Wilson College Gymkhana for New Year’s Eve celebrations when the event was abruptly stopped by the police.

The incident took place at around 9.45pm when the police barged into the venue to check if the organisers had got the required permits. It turns out they did not have police permission for the speakers installed at the venue.

“We went to check the permissions and the event was stopped as they did not have the permission for speakers,” said Zunjarrao Gharal, senior police inspector from Marine Drive police station.

The crowd, upset that they had to pay for an event that was suddenly cancelled, began throwing beer and water bottles at the stage. “We had to control the crowd as they were getting aggressive. The public was upset not only because the show was stopped, but also because apparently, they didn’t get the promised food and drinks,” said Gharal.

The show was stopped for almost two hours. The police allowed Oberoi’s performance of only for 15 minutes from 11.45pm till midnight. The organisers were fined Rs12, 500, an amount which included the 15 minutes during which the actor performed.

“I had gone for the event with my friends and we were shocked when the show was stopped. Everybody was angry as people present there were expecting to have a rocking New Year celebration. Only in the end, the event started for 15 minutes but it was a disaster,” said Ashwini Kumar, a student.

The police said that Oberoi, was even given police protection until the angry crowd cooled down.

It took almost half an hour for the police from Marine Drive police station to control the crowd. Allegedly, some Marine Drive residents had called up the police control room to complain about the loud music that was being played at the venue.
