The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has mooted small changes in the existing immersion methods for Ganesh idols.

Idols that are immersed in the designated immersion tanks at various ghats in the city would be taken out immediately and re-immersed at a convenient location later. This was recently disclosed by the honorary advisor, Ganesh immersion committee of the PMC, Ajay Vaishampayan.

In Pune city, people immerse Ganesh idols on the second, fifth, seventh and last day of the festival as per family tradition. The civic body has built water tanks on the river banks at various locations.

As the water in the tanks is much cleaner compared to that in rivers, many citizens prefer to immerse idols in the tanks.
However, in the last few years, there has been a controversy over disposal of idols immersed in the tanks as civic employees were alleged to be careless in doing their job. Some activists had complained that their sentiments were hurt due to the careless handling of the idols in the immersion tanks.

Vaishampayan’s disclosure assumes significance in the light of these allegations. According to him, after immersion in the tanks, the idols would be re-immersed in a well or quarry with clean water or in a natural water body outside the city.

“The idols would be shifted for re-immersion immediately on availability of vehicles and employees,’’ Vaishampayan said.
Those immersing idols in the tanks would have to register their names, addresses and cellphone numbers in a  record book near the tank. He said next year, management of tanks and re-immersion would be altered and citizens would be consulted beforehand.
